Take a look at some of my work, ranging from covers, news, sports, entertainment, features, and editorials over the past three years!
My Work
Junior year: September edition. First news story and design. I found this design difficult because there were no photos of Ryan, as he was a new student the year prior. I decided to go with the four football captains carrying out his helmet because I wanted his memory to be the main focus.
Won a MIPA award for design.
Senior year: October edition. I had been working with Canva over the summer, so for a page where I wanted to get creative; I decided to make a parking pass and have it look like it was hanging from the headline, as well as make an infographic comparing our costs with other schools.
Senior year: November edition. I based this design on a tier list website that became quite popular with students over the summer. S for superior and then A, B, C, and D for ranking. This page was going to be very text-heavy, so I had to get creative on how to use not only the stories but the quotes, too. There were so many things I had to work around and incorporate to make it appealing to one's eye.
Senior year: February edition. As the paper starts nearing its last few editions, I wanted to do a section regarding seniors/my time as a senior. My advisor and I came up with the idea to do a "what to know for and from seniors." I worked with Canva and InDesign to fit everything on the page cleanly. I was able to incorporate six quotes from fellow seniors, important dates, and a column through trial and error in terms of spacing.
Junior year: February edition. Since this was a review of Barstool's Instagram accounts, I wanted to mimic the one a student made for Shores. Using Canva, I was able to make a replica, so it was like one was looking at their phone.
Won a MIPA award for design.
Senior year: November edition. At my high school, we have many things we can write about, but they don't always make the cut for various reasons. I took that into account when we wanted to keep a 12-page paper with a staff of nine. I used Canva, and a monthly "What's the Word" was born.
Sophomore year: March (second to last) edition. This was one of my very first sports pages, and I had a lot of information and pictures I wanted to incorporate, so I had to get creative with how I displayed everything. It took a lot of trial and error in designing, but finally, having the quotes surround the pictures and changing the text color, I was able to come up with a design that I was proud of for my first year as a staff member.
Senior year: November edition. Part of my responsibility as Editor-in-Chief is designing the cover page and developing a good headline. This student was our main sports profile, and as I was going through photos from the tennis match, I fell in love with this one, and the headline almost wrote itself. I had been struggling with what to do for a cover because I wanted to tie it to the center pages, but with this, it seemed too perfect, timing and picture-wise, to pass up.
